Junior Team Tennis League

 

 

The Sumter Tennis Association with assistance from the Palmetto Tennis Center sponsors the Sumter Junior Team Tennis League, a USTA sanctioned league, during the spring of each year for youth in Sumter and the surrounding areas.  The focus of the program is on improving skills, enjoying tennis as an exercise and participating in team competition.

 

Each team consists of at least 4 boys and 4 girls.  Competition usually lasts approximately 6 weeks and consists of at least one practice (during the week) and one competition match weekly (normally on Saturdays).  Participation in a high school tennis program or tennis clinics at the Palmetto Tennis Center normally substitutes for the one practice required weekly.

 

Winning teams in each division represent Sumter at the USTA South Carolina state tournament in July each year.  The tournament will be at our own Palmetto Tennis Center in 2009.

 

Teams are divided into the following divisions and categories

(or as closely as possible, depending on participation):

 

1. Age 14 and Under Division - Intermediate Teams and Advanced

          Teams

 

2. Age 18 and Under Division - Intermediate Teams and Advanced

          Teams

 

Limited away matches are held in Columbia, Camden or other neighboring

cities, in addition to the regular matches at the Palmetto Tennis Center. 

These are optional and require parental transportation.

 

The cost per player is $20 and covers the cost of a t-shirt, tennis balls and

other expenses.

 

Registration forms are available in the office at the Palmetto Tennis Center. 

The deadline for signing up is normally in March. Teams are chosen shortly

after the deadline passes. 

 

Coaches notify players of team assignments, practices and match dates.

 

 

Note:   Players are required to be USTA members.  Match scores are entered into USTA’s TennisLink using USTA member numbers.   

 

In addition to Junior Team Tennis we support the Rising Stars program and will be hosting two Rising Stars tournaments this year. The first one will be held on Saturday, July 25, and the second one will be Saturday, November 14. Rising Stars tournaments are intended to introduce young players to the experience of tournament tennis
